| Bio: | ![]() Character Information Name: Marmie True Name: Alison March Gender: Female Age: 21 Birthday: September 2, 2000 Greatest Ambition: At one time to be a teacher. That hasn’t really changed though the focus has turned to retaining as much knowledge of the old world as possible. Physical Description: Allie used to be a round girl but like everyone else she’s lost weight in the years since the outbreak of the Ans Virus though she isn’t exactly aware of this fact and still seems to fear her body. Two years of limited food and necessary labor has toned her the same as anyone else though she has still somehow managed to retain a certain womanly roundness. Her hair dark and her eyes are blue and, in her opinion, singularly uninspiring. Her lack of confidence in her appearance shows itself readily in the fact that, unlike most survivors, she doesn’t really even try to make do when it comes to clothing. She wears what’s clean and that’s enough for her. Her hair is usually pulled back partly for practicality’s sake since she spends so much time with small children but also because she doesn’t see a point in making any effort when no one will notice. The thing that she doesn’t realize is that she’s really quite pretty. Distinguishing Marks: Marmie has several small scars caused by various accidents and spills as a child. Two under her chin from falling up the front steps at her Grandma’s, one on the side of her right hand from a screw that she didn’t realize was in a 2X4 when she was helping her grandmother on the ranch and one on her hip that came from a mishap by her doctor when she got one of her booster shots. Sexual Orientation: Straight though some might question whether she’s a sexual being at all. Single or taken: Single Best friend: open Personality: Marmie is a nurturer to the core. She’s gentle and patient with everyone though she can be firm when necessary. When you first meet her you get the mistaken impression that she’s a very shy girl but the truth of the matter is that, though she isn’t great with people she doesn’t know she’s actually a bit of a chatter box and will talk to you about just about anything. She tries doggedly to keep a positive outlook at succeeds for the most part. That said, she occasionally suffers from bouts of depression that can last anywhere from a couple of hours to about a week. During these times she’s cranky and easily hurt by the slightest thing. The good news is that she’s usually able to talk herself out of them before she drives everyone batty. She loves learning and she always has. She wasn’t the best student because her idea of learning didn’t always coincide with that of her teachers but no one could doubt her love of knowledge and few have tried though many have questioned her work ethic, and rightly so. Until the virus made pitching in a necessity she would rather laze around playing on the internet and reading fan fiction than do anything truly productive. She loves children and she’s very good with them. Mainly because she doesn’t fear dealing with them on their level. She plays with the smallest children teaching them the same combination of western and Native American nursery rhymes and stories she remembers from when she was small. Because of their changed circumstances most lessons have become purely practical though she does manage to set aside time with each age group about once a week to teach such frivolities as history and literature. The one thing she misses most (besides her grandmother) is music. She plays a little though she knows that she’ll never have any real skill. You can frequently hear her humming to herself when going about mundane tasks. If you listen hard enough you might recognize the tune as something that would have played on a classic rock station before the virus. She fears falling in love more than anything. She was eighteen when the virus hit and in the midst of falling in love for the first time. Mere survival took precedence over any relationship and the idea of giving that much of herself to someone else scares the bejezus out of her. Besides, she’s pretty sure that she’s unlovable due to a marked lack of any kind of romantic interest from anyone before and after her lone experience in matters of the heart. Actually, she probably fears abandonment even more than romantic entanglements. Her personal history hasn’t exactly given her a lot of faith in people sticking by her. She forms bonds with people quickly but they usually don’t go very deep because she’s afraid it will just hurt her again. That said, when she does bond with a person it’s a very strong bond. And she’s incredibly loyal, nearly to the point of blindness to people she allows herself to care about. Personal History: People tend to forget that, before the mines came, Sundance used to be a typical western town. An area where ranchers and cowboys still lived by the stoic creed of their forefathers. It was into this world that both Shae Collins and Caleb March were born. Shae was the daughter of the owner of one of the larger ranches in the area and a total rodeo princess. Shae knew just how appealing she was to any straight male within a two mile radius. But the only one she really wanted was one of the few who was completely out of bounds. Shae first saw him working the horses at her father’s ranch. Caleb was the son of another local family who ran a much smaller operation. He had taken the job at the Collins ranch because his father believed that he would better appreciate money made outside of the family business. A decision that Joel March would regret for the rest of his life because as soon as Caleb set eyes on Shae he was lost to his family. Their relationship could only be described as obsessive on both of their parts. Shae loved the way that she was everything to Caleb and Caleb loved Shae with every fiber of his being. She could do anything and he would forgive her. This was something that she learned early on in their relationship and something that she regularly took advantage of over the years. Caleb’s family was able to exert enough authority to convince him to finish school before he married Shae. The day after graduation he left and it would be the last time his mother saw him for ten years his father never saw him again. Many long time residents of Sundance believe that Joel’s death came because he never got over the guilt he felt over introducing his son to the woman who would ruin his life. Caleb started working the rodeos after he left home with Shae. His skills with horses came in handy and made them a fairly decent living, though Shae wasn’t too proud to call her parents when they were running low on cash to ask for money. Theirs was a nomadic existence which suited Shae and Caleb was happy as long as she was. They’d been married for three or four years when Shae realized she was pregnant. At first she was worried that the baby wasn’t Caleb’s because she wasn’t exactly exclusive with her affections. Once Alison was born Caleb was sure that Shae would settle into motherhood. Unfortunately, he was wrong. By the time Allie was able to toddle along behind her father it became clear that Shae had no interest in being a mother. Allie was a happy baby and most of the people that Caleb worked for had no problem with her tagging along with her daddy. And she was a daddy’s girl without a doubt. And he found a new love in his daughter. As she grew and her natural intelligence came to the forefront Caleb started talking about giving up their nomadic lifestyle and settling down. Maybe going back to Sundance and working for his parents or hers. Anything to give his little girl the life she deserved. Shae refused. Finally, when Allie was eight and Caleb watched her reaching out to read anything she could get her hands on--veterinary manuals, cereal boxes, her mother’s trashy novels it didn’t matter--Caleb put his foot down. Sort of. He knew that Shae couldn’t live any life but the one they had but he also knew that Allie needed so much more than what she would end up with so he did the only thing he could think of. He went to his mother. Constance was not entirely thrilled about taking in her eight-year-old granddaughter just months after the death of her husband but she could see that the lonely looking little girl needed a home and someone besides her father to love her. So she took the girl in and vowed to give her a life that would make up for her early childhood. At first Allie resented being left with her grandmother. She went from a world where she could basically do anything she wanted to living in a very structured environment. Though if you got right down to it she liked being with her grandmother she just hated being separated from her dad. At first he called every couple of days to talk to her but the calls tapered off to the point that when the virus struck, she hadn’t heard from him in a couple of years. She knew her dad loved her he just loved her mother more. As for Shae, Allie barely gave the woman who birthed her a thought. She figured it was only fair since that was pretty much how much her mother thought of her. The one thing that Allie liked about staying in one place (besides her grandmother) was school. Not that you could really tell since she rarely seemed to be paying attention but she loved the idea that there was a place that you went every day that was full of information and books. She was one of the students who frustrate teachers it was plain she was intelligent but she refused to put any effort into things if she didn’t like them. She was in sixth grade when her teacher decided that what Allie needed was a little responsibility to get her to focus and set up for her to tutor some of the younger students in the elementary school. She didn’t succeed entirely. Allie didn’t pay any more attention to her studies but it did awaken a desire to teach in her. If you ask her she’ll tell you that was when she decided she wanted to be a teacher. In high school Allie was neither popular nor unpopular. The fact is that many of the survivors probably had classes with her but the likelihood of them remembering her is small. It was an incident with one of the popular boys that helped to make Allie feel so poorly about herself. She had been sitting in one of the study cubicles reading when two of the more popular boys sat near her. The didn’t see her and continued their conversation which involved rating the girls in their class. Her name came up and one of the boys made a crude remark about her weight. From that point on her clothes became more and more baggy and shapeless. She didn’t want anyone to even think that she had a body at all. She was getting ready to leave for college when her grandmother fell ill with the virus. She stayed with her, nursing her as best she could given her limited understanding of medicine. She would have called the doctors but Constance had refused saying she knew she was dying and she wanted to ensure she died as she had lived, in her home with people she loved. When Constance died Allie buried her on the family property and prepared to leave. She packed up what few valuables she and her grandmother had accumulated and headed out. She’d planned on looking for civilization but ended up falling in with the Twin Feathers instead. Her name is a play on the nickname the March sisters in Little Women had for their mother.
